Here is Berklee’s story:

When Berklee Leary was 23, she learned that she was positive for the BRCA genetic mutation. Berklee diligently got mammograms and MRIs every 6-7 months for 7 straight years in order to mitigate her breast cancer risk. In June 2021 she felt a lump in her left breast, but assumed since she had just had a clean mammogram 6 months prior, that it could wait for her appointment the next month. Unfortunately, when she finally went, the lump looked suspicious and she needed a biopsy. Two days later, on July 28, 2021, at 30 years old, Berklee was diagnosed with Stage 3c Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Berklee underwent a port placement surgery, 5 months of chemotherapy, the loss of her hair, a double mastectomy surgery with lymph node removal, and 39 rounds of radiation. Throughout her journey she remained resilient and positive. She saw the obstacle in front of her and she was determined to conquer it. But unfortunately, her obstacles were just beginning. While she was undergoing radiation treatment, her oncologist happened to spot something on her liver.

After a month of testing, on March 25, 2022, they confirmed cancer in Berklee’s liver, nearby lymph node, and a dozen spots all over her bones. This elevated her diagnosis to Stage 4.

Berklee is a single mama to her two young sons, SpEd Clinical Specialist, professional counselor, faith warrior, sports enthusiast, concert-goer, and TikTok creator. Currently she is on a pill that is designed to work with her genetic mutation to kill the cancer systemically and prays every day that it buys her time. Despite a terminal diagnosis, she continues to appreciate and live out every single day as a gift. She makes it her mission to remain a light during the darkest of battles.
